House Lannister is one of the Great Houses of Westeros and the principal lords of the Westerlands. Following the events of the War of the Five Kings, House Lannister descends from the union between Tyrion Lannister and Margaery Tyrell. Further back, they trace their lineage to the line of Lann the Clever, who tricked the Casterly family out of their traditional keep of Casterly Rock.

Their sigil is a golden lion on a field of crimson. Their official motto is "Hear Me Roar!" However, their unofficial motto, equally well known, is "A Lannister always pays his debts." Members of this family are often fair-haired, tall, and handsome.

The current head of the house is Tysane Lannister.

History[]

Third Century AC[]

300-301AC - The Second War of Conquest[]

During the Second War of Conquest House Lannister was divided and broken; ravaged by the chaos of the War of the Five Kings, and torn apart by rivalries and machinations. Tyrion Lannister stood with House Targaryen, whilst Cersei Lannister and many of their household backed King Tommen. In the end, Cersei and Tommen were killed. Aegon and Daenerys named Tyrion the Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West and kept him as their Hand until his death.

Tyrion was soon wed to Margaery Tyrell. The Rose was able to grow strong within the craggy soil of the Westerlands, and soon the Lion's Court at Casterly Rock became a mirror of that of Highgarden. Sycophants and flatterers filled the Rock, but found no solace with Lord Tyrion.

326-329AC - The Winter of Wolves[]

The Westerlands suffered through the Winter of Wolves much like the rest of the realm, though Lannister gold helped keep nearby smallfolk in better conditions than their neighbours elsewhere.

331-334AC - The War in the Narrows[]

When King Rhaegar I Targaryen gave the call to arms, House Lannister answered the call. The banners of the Rock were seen all throughout the conflict.

332AC - The Red Reaving[]

The arrival of Dagon the Skinner in the Westerlands served as a sharp reminder for many that the Iron Islands were no idle backwater, but a constant threat to the peace and well-being of those who dared to forget them. It had only been thirty years since Euron Crow's Eye swept the west coast with fire and sword, and so the sons and grandsons of the men who fought that day now rose to defeat this new threat.

Lord Tyrion Lannister was quick to react to the threats posed to his lands, and the Lion created a formidable coalition of Western Lords, fought with them and stopped the reavers.

335AC - The Red God Revival[]

Lannisport was one of many cities in Westeros that saw a surge of Red God faithfuls, as the events across the Narrow Sea and the legend of the saviour who fought the Others with a flaming sword began to spread. Though they did not prove as troublesome here as they did in other regions, the City Watch of Lannisport kept a careful eye, and the faith did not spread far from its centers within the city.

339AC - The Summer Sickness[]

The Westerlands and House Lannister were terribly afflicted by the effects of the Summer Sickness, with Lannisport being the most heavily affected settlement due to its constant exposure to incoming trade. Many grew fearful and suspicious of strangers, most especially the red god faithfuls who had begun settling in the city only four years before. Some were ousted, their property revoked, and either turned to banditry in the hillside or returned to the lands of the east.

Deeper in the countryside the plague still took root, leaving thousands dead or grieving.

Once again Lord Tyrion Lannister was quick to react in time to this crisis, and took the necessary measures to prevent the plague spreading further.

344AC - Death of Lord Tyrion[]

After a particularly grand and expansive banquet, Lord Tyrion Lannister's heart gives out on him. His son, Leo Lannister, becomes Lord of Casterly Rock. His mother, Lady Margaery, retains a great amount of control over the court at the Rock.

346AC - The Southern Schism[]

The starry rites traveled up the coast, septons who favoured the Starry Sept travelling along the ocean road before heading inland. Already a reasonably pious place, many of the smallfolk in the Westerlands favoured the ideals of the Starry Septon, and agreed that the decadence of both the royal family and King's Landing were offensive to the gods. House Lannister tends not to involve itself too much with such arguments, taking the side of popular opinion within the Westerlands more oft than not.

351-354AC - The Mead Summer[]

The greatest years in recent Westerosi history, the Mead Summer saw bountiful harvests across the Westerlands, and a general air of peace and plenty. New veins of ore were discovered in the hills, making the fortunes of many merchants and miners, and to the surprise of all a small pride of lions was discovered in the countryside, though the animals were thought to have been wiped out.

352AC - The Blackwater Tourney[]

The banners of House Lannister were seen at the Blackwater Tourney.

355AC - The Great Tourney at Harrenhal[]

The banners of House Lannister were seen during the Tourney at Harrenhal.

360AC - The Royal Tour[]

When Crown Prince Aenys Targaryen and other members of the royal court travelled around the continent they made sure to stop at Casterly Rock, visiting with the Lannisters for a time. The choice by Prince Aenys to spurn Gwynesse Lannister in favour of Lenore Blackwood was seen as a humiliating slight by many members of House Lannister, including Loreon.

366AC - The Halfblood Incursion[]

Mara Halfblood's fury would rock the Westerlands from Banefort to Fair Isle, as the remnants of her raiders burnt the coast and hunted for plunder, hoping to gather enough coin to field another army. The Lannister fleet would rise to answer them, meeting the Salt Queen of the Iron Islands in the Battle of the Strait - and defeating her, slaying both the queen and the rest of her host. Loreon Lannister himself led the Lannister Navy into a pitched victorious battle, to great acclaim.

366 - Loreon as Master of Laws; The Downfall of Lenore Blackwood[]

Following the myriad of accusations that swarmed around Lenore Blackwood and Lord Celtigar, Loreon's friends and family at court in the capital had the Lion made Master of Laws. He was subsequently tasked with overseeing the trials. Lenore's marriage was annulled, her son Maegor deemed a bastard, and she was subsequently executed.

Following these successes, Loreon would remain in the Capital until the death of his own Lord Father in 370 AC.

379AC - The Kingswood Tourney[]

The banners of House Lannister were seen at the Kingswood Tourney.

388AC - The Hammer Uprising[]

The peasant revolts sparked by the death of Brynden Hammer would eventually cause trouble in the Westerlands. Smallfolk threw down their tools or refused to pay taxes, forcing the lords of the region to respond. Riots in Lannisport were widespread but short lived, with the Lannister forces quickly stamping down any signs of dissent. Brutal punishments were inflicted on any man or woman, of any age, suspected of having instigated these uprisings. Loreon was instrumental in putting out the flames of resistance. After a time, the general feeling of dissatisfaction faded, but many still remember the events of the period.

392-394AC - The Great Famine[]

A period of hunger that affected the Westerlands as well, though mayhaps not so strongly as other regions. House Lannister did what it could to alleviate the suffering of its people, and spent vast amounts of it's own capital to help stave off starvation. Funds were also granted to smaller Western Houses to ensure that they were able to survive the Winter.

396-402AC - The War of the Three Thieves[]

Just as in the past, when the King called, the Westerlands answered. The Lannister fleet arrived along with it's Lord in the Stepstones during the latter part of the war, along with House Lannister's soldiers and bannermen. Gerald Lannister, the second son of Lord Loreon, fell in battle at Ormollen's Pyre.

Fourth Century AC[]

402-405AC - The Scarlet Winter[]

Many ports in the Westerlands froze near solid, stifling both trade and travel in the region. Many fairs and festivals were held regardless, to keep the smallfolk happy and the nobles from dying of boredom. Attempts by House Lannister to break up the ice surrounding Lannisport would cost several dozen men their lives. Lord Loreon's wife passed away during the winter.

Recent History[]

House Lannister participated in the Mummer's War of 408 AC, and led it's forces against the Ironborn and into the Riverlands. They did not participate during the ultimate battle of the war, but by the end, Lord Loreon had earned much prestige in the Iron Islands, having reaped the land for many a year to come.

During the interregnum years, Lord Loreon commissioned the Sept of the Faithful, and was completed in 417 AC. Following Lord Loreon's death in 420 AC, Lord Tybolt, his grandson, inherited the Rock. He ruled for fourteen years, and died during the War of Three Banners, alongside his son, Tywin.

Lady Tysane inherited shortly after. Following the war, reconstruction began for Lannisport, following it's near-destruction during the war.
